The vision of using broadcast technology in education in a systematic way accelerated and took concrete shape with the successful deployment of the INSAT series of satellites by India. The “INSAT for Education” initiative of the Government of India (MHRD 1982) conceived during the VII Plan period led to the establishment of Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET) located at New Delhi and the State Institutes of Educational Technology (SIETs) located at Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh in 1984, and later in Kerala.

State Institute of Educational Technology Andhra Pradesh was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Sri N.T.Rama Rao Garu in 1985 and has been functioning as one of the Directorates and formidable structure to the department of School Education since its inception. SIET is playing major role in implementation of ICT in Schools project with a mandate to design, develop, and disseminate the rich educational audio-visual content based on school curriculum in three major formats such as Audio programmes, Video Programmes, and Interactive Multimedia Learning objects. Presently SIET is disseminating its content through the transmission of Television, Radio, web and CDs/ DVDs.

SIET is a unique organization in the Government of Andhra Pradesh in developing educational content and its dissemination to support new age educational policies like ICT in Education, and proposed Digital Class room projects, and National repository of Open Educational Resources(NROER) being organized by MHRD and NCERT, New Delhi.
